Former Chief Medical Officer for Region 5’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Joins the Health Plan with a Heart
Sunrise, Fla. (January 5, 2026) – South Florida-based Community Care Plan (CCP), the health plan with a heart, is pleased to announce that Robert Furno, MD, has been promoted to Senior Vice President & Chief Medical Officer (CMO), following the retirement of former CMO, Dr. Miguel Venereo. Dr. Furno reports to Jessica Lerner, President & CEO of Community Care Plan.
Dr. Furno joined CCP as Vice President of Medical Operations in April 2022 and most recently served as Associate Chief Medical Officer. He has spearheaded strategies to enhance quality and risk management, utilization management, and pharmacy operations across various programs, including Medicaid and uninsured care. His focus on delivering inclusive, quality-centered care has been pivotal in navigating today’s evolving healthcare landscape.
In his new capacity, Dr. Furno will continue to advance our mission to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve, leveraging his deep clinical expertise and strategic vision to ensure the highest standards of care. He will lead and oversee Community Health, Medical Economics, Medical Management, Quality, Pharmacy Services, and Population Health.
Dr. Furno brings extensive experience and expertise to his new role. In addition to his role at CCP, he continues to serve part-time as an attending physician at Broward Health North, applying his clinical expertise directly to patient care. He also has a clinical teaching role in the Emergency Medicine residency program. This dual role allows him to remain closely connected to the front line of healthcare delivery.
Before joining Community Care Plan, Dr. Furno served as Chief Medical Officer for Region 5’s (Chicago) Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, National Medical Director of Government Programs at AIM Specialty Health in Chicago, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. With an exceptional educational background, including an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, a Master of Public Health from the University of Illinois Chicago, and a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Furno also embodies the values of excellence and continuous learning.
